After Hours eBook Claire Kennedy Reviews
After Hours is a salacious book that is as fun as it is crazy. And trust me, it is very crazy. It kind of reminded me of Gossip Girl mixed with The Bling Ring- that movie based on a true story of the teenage girls that broke into celebrity houses in California. And I don't mean in the sense that After Hours was about rich kids on the upper east side or that they broke into celebrity houses, I just mean that the teens had the same totally insane jaded, I am going to do things that normal teenagers wouldn't even dream of at my age. Or maybe more kids do these things than I thought. What do I know? (I just know, that I didn't know anyone doing some of this stuff when I was Isa, Xavi, Peter, and Finn's age.)
After Hours takes place at a nice restuarant during summer. But afterhours in the restaurant is when things really heat up. The waiters, and boss, play this game called TIPS. The book describes tips as “...a game that’s been running for about thirty years. Every two weeks, the staff contributes about 20 percent of their tips into a pot for a chance to take an unknown dare." Winner takes all. The idea of tips made for a very interesting premise for the book. I enjoyed this book, but I couldn't take it too seriously, otherwise I just wanted to get help for every one of these teens. But taking it as a fun summer read, I really enjoyed it. There are hints of romance, but not between the couple I wanted right from the start of the book. Darn you Claire! You know I wanted to see
Isa and Finn get together!
You should pick up After Hours when you are looking for a wild crazy ride. If you like scandal and reality tv, even better. This is a book that you should read with some popcorn at hand. I think they would make a great CW tv show. I thought the tips game was the extent of the crazy that Isa, Xavi, Peter, and Finn would get into, but boy oh boy was I wrong. This book just kept building right until the very end! It is told in alternating points of view between the four main characters. I liked Finn the best followed closely by Peter and Isa. I don't know what was wrong with me when it came to Xavi, but there was always a slight disconnect when it came to her. I also felt like Isa's story was kind of incomplete. I wish we got to see more of her. Maybe in another book? hint hint.
Bottom Line After Hours is a fun and crazy ride. Teens gone wild. I acknowledge that this will probably not be a book that is loved by everyone. It deals with some insane issues and is not always PC. It should not be read by people that dislike scandal or teens engaging in adult and maybe slightly illegal behavior. But it should be read by people that don't mind that and like a little crazy in their books. I had a lot of fun with After Hours. Just let go and go with it.
*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

After Hours is an unexceptional book that left me struggling to finish. A book about dares that had me excited to read, because I thought it would be similar to Nerve by Jeanne Ryan, but was not well written and not exciting at all. While reading this book I found some grammar and spelling errors which was really annoying and the dares in the book weren’t exciting at all. They were lackluster and this book kept piling up problems one by one. I also had a problem with the pacing in this book, whole weeks would go by with nothing happening. And the multiple point of views was really unorganized, and broke up the flow of the story. I didn’t like this book at all and was excited to finish just so I could start another book. It wasn’t extremely hard to read; the authors writing was alright, it was just boring and unimaginative. Good thing this book was short, or I would have had to label it DNF. This book was super predictable and uncreative. The characters were hard to relate to and the book basically put me to sleep. The cover on this book was awful also. Overall I really think there could have been a whole lot more thought and time put into this book to make it better. I was unimpressed and would not recommend it to anyone.
As of the late, I've been comparing quite a few books to Gossip Girl. My ex-boyfriend knew it as the show where "everyone had sex with one another." Even this book has been compared to it. But in lieu of comparing yet another book to the renowned series, I'll mix it up a bit.
Does any remember that show, SKINS? On MTV? It was all these teenagers partying and getting drunk and acting like Grade-A trash? Okay, imagine that, but with a game of Panic invented by immature schoolboys thrown in. There you have After Hours. Congratulations.
Xavi, Finn, Peter, and Isa all work together at Waterside Café. Isa is a new employee when she learns of the high stakes game, Tips. Tips is basically a glorified version of Truth or Dare. The dares are absolute trash. Whereas in Panic, it was a life-or-death situation. In Tips, the dares consist of makeouts, hookups, and wearing little-to-nothing to serve a customer and completely ruin their dining experience.
Peter and Xavi are newly-minted stepsiblings but Peter has apparently crushed on Xavi long before. Xavi is into fashion but before pursuing her style dreams, she hopes to become a waitress but unfortunately can't until her next birthday. Peter is absolutely obsessed with Xavi and will make sure to let you know whenever possible. After hooking up, Xavi is convinced she's pregnant. She spends the remainder of the novel, cradling her imaginary baby bump while Peter envisions life on a show called Teen Dad. When it turns out to be to only a stomach flu, they kiss and go off to have more unprotected sex, I presume.
Meanwhile, Finn and Isa have their own relationship blossoming. While on their first (and only) date, she is ruthlessly smacked by one of his "clients." Finn is found out to be a prostitute. And after Isa later catches him sleeping with the town mayor, she demands half of his cash in exchange for her silence.
If only we all worked at Waterside Café. Seems like a breeze there, don't it? Occasionally, one of them ran out to serve a table or wipe down a countertop, but otherwise they were enjoying their chill time. They drank, made out, and Rico, their manager, never got on their backs about their slacking. Even though their co-workers were mentioned, they were only so rarely shown and they weren't any better.
I hated every single one of these characters. But if I was forced to like one, it'd probably be Finn. He handled his situation well and was seemingly the most mature of the four.
I finished this book only for the hype. The writing was nothing impressive but the drama, if you could call it that, temporarily held me in. I can't say I'd recommend it but other opinions may differ. Check if out if you like.
After Hours is a well written book with an awesome plot. It wasn't predictable and kept me intrigued from cover to cover. I highly recommend this book.
I would definitely not recommend giving this book to your teenagers for sure because it is very inappropriate. It's a quick read, filled with scandalous behavior!
