Over the span of several weeks, picking up and putting down again and again, I read all four books collected in this tome. The Voyage of the Beagle was an interesting travelogue, the Origin of Species is of course timeless, the Descent of Man was a difficult slog and the Expression of Emotions was interesting though dated.I cannot really say that this edition has something that you would miss in reading these books individually. The introductions from E.O. Wilson are only a page or two each and don’t provide any additional guidance or insight into these works. The illustrations are well done and the font is easy to read, but I doubt these couldn’t be found in other editions.
If you are interested in reading the major works of Darwin, this is a cost-effective and easy way of accessing all four texts. But, lacking substantive introductions and containing the long and somewhat tedious discussion of sexual selection among animals in the Descent of Man, I cannot say that this is a must have text. Enthusiasts of Darwin and those with a strong curiosity about nineteenth century science should, however, find this a welcome volume to read and add to their library.

From So Simple a Beginning Darwin Four Great Books Voyage of the Beagle The Origin of Species The Descent of Man The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals Charles Darwin Edward O Wilson 9780393061345 Books Reviews
Today I received my copy of this book from . I had read "On the Origin of Species" back the 70s and was looking forward to reading some of Darwin's other writings. Sadly I will be waiting a bit longer. I was anticipating a quality hard cover book, being that this is a Norton publication. I have several Norton publications in my library, most of which have been read several times, and all of which are still in good condition. I was saddened, however, when, after removing the shrink wrap and taking the book from it's slip-cover, to find that I held in my hands a book with the cover cleanly separated from the pages. This is certainly not the quality I am accustomed to when I purchase a Norton book. Return arrangements have been made and another copy is to be shipped to me. I do hope that the second copy will arrive in readable conditionl
What a great read! Voyage of the Beagle gave me so much insight not only into the man, but so many places around the globe during an age of early modern enlightenment. The things discovered and the impact we were having on the earth and its inhabitants even then. To compare the lands traveled to and examined to what they are today, the changes are as extensive as Darwin's comparisons to the day of Cook and earlier explorers. I'm into the Origin of Species now, which is why I wanted the book mostly--the wonderful exploits and adventures on the Beagle I would have missed. A curiosity for the sciences helps one appreciate how meticulously Darwin went about arriving at his conclusions, the deep reasoning he possessed to uncover what is to all reasoned individuals the true nature of our beginnings and evolution on this planet. So much more amazing a story of humanity than supernatural fantasy and dogma. Our evolved curiosity imparts a thirst for knowledge best gained through understanding nature, revealing the reality of existence. Darwin's insight alone brought us so very far in our understanding...It's been a good year now, and I read a bit most nights before sleep, so I will be savoring it for a good while yet to come.
At this point in history, no one who is buying a text like this is really reviewing the content. Therefore, if you are looking to buy this text you are not really looking for whether or not the book is worth the read but whether or not it is the best edition available. That being said, this is the best possible edition of one of the most well known books in human history!
I really can't find much to complain about while reading this book. The pages are well formatted with an easy to read text style and format, the images (some of which were actually in the original editions) are useful and help to add to the experience of reading, and the italics and bolded letters at the beginning of sections make it very easy to follow the thought progression even when you are reading while tired. Despite the later updates even during the life of Darwin and the universal rejection of several of his ideas later on, this collection is very well put together and is the best source of the original works available. Any Darwinist should own and read a copy.
I uploaded some pictures of my copy, so go to the top of the page and you can view them by running your mouse over the icons of other pictures which appear under the picture of the book on the left side of the screen.
